What are the 4 steps to using a fire extinguisher?

Do you need to use a fire extinguisher? Hold the fire extinguisher upright by the bottom handle, and remember the acronym P.A.S.S.

P.A.S.S

Step 1: Pull the pin.

The pull pin of a fire extinguisher is held in place with a tamper seal. Pulling the pin out will break the tamper seal and free the operating handle which will allow you to discharge the fire extinguisher.

Step 2: Aim at the base of the fire.

Standing about 8 feet back from the fire, point the hose or nozzle of the fire extinguisher at the base (fuel) of the fire.

Step 3: Squeeze the handle.

Again standing about 8 feet back from the fire, squeeze the handle of the fire extinguisher. This will release the pressurized extinguishing agent.

Step 4: Sweep from side to side until the fire is completely out.

Slowly move forward, continuing to aim at the base of the fire. Once the fire is extinguished, watch the area in case the fire re-ignites.
